“I come from that place. I come from here, and I am neither here nor there. I have two names that come together but pull apart. I have two languages, but I have forgotten which is the language of my dreams.”

— Mahmoud Darwish

Neither Here nor There features recent work by seventeen faculty members of the University of Pittsburgh’s Studio Arts Department, on display now through April 20, 2024 at Brew House Arts (711 S 21st Street, Pittsburgh, PA). While these artists all engage in disparate forms of multimedia creation such as video, photography, printmaking, painting, installation, and sculpture, their unique practices underscore shared investments in locating the fluid nature of things in between. Artists grapple with issues of movement and migration, displacement, the politics of remembering, personal histories, and identity as neither here nor there, not one thing nor another, but simultaneously occurring at the same time.

Selected artworks are loosely grouped based on asymmetrical relationships to environment, systems of belonging, memory, ritual, and the body. Emphasizing frameworks aimed at dismantling normative systems, Neither Here nor There sees time as malleable—it thickens, pools, and elongates, ultimately highlighting ways of seeing as powerful acts of resistance.
